Origin and Location

Yun Wu Cha (also known as Lu Shan Yun Wu or "Lu Shan Cloud-Mist Tea") is grown on Mount Lu in Jiujiang County, Jiangxi Province, China. The region has a humid climate with frequent clouds and fog. For about half the year, the mountains are shrouded in mist, creating natural shade for the tea plantations.

The high altitude and temperature fluctuations between day and night, combined with the plant's sheltered growth from direct sunlight, promote the development of aromatic compounds and a richer tea composition in the leaves.

History and Status

Tea has been grown in Lu Shan since ancient times. It is mentioned that tea trees were cultivated there as early as the Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD).

In subsequent centuries, Yun Wu became a highly prized variety: during the Song Dynasty, it was sometimes used as a "tribute tea" (an offering to the emperor).

Today, it is considered one of the most famous Chinese green teas, distinguished by its unique combination of location and processing quality.

Characteristics: leaves, color, aroma, flavor

  • Leaves and shape: Typically, young buds or young upper leaves (one bud + one leaf) are used.
  • The leaves are tightly curled, cylindrical, and slightly hairy (with silvery hairs) – often referred to as "silver pekoe" as an appearance element.
  • Brew Color: This tea produces a clear, transparent infusion, sometimes light green or slightly yellowish.
  • Aroma: A fresh aroma, herbaceous and floral notes are often noted. Some descriptions mention hints of chestnut and roasted bean flavors.
  • Taste: Soft, with a slight sweetness without any obvious bitterness when brewed correctly. Some producers emphasize the umami or richness of the mid-palate.
  • Characteristics such as a "long finish" and "persistent aroma" are also frequently mentioned.

Many reviews and tea shops describe Yun Wu as a tea with a "sweet, soft, refreshing" flavor, with floral and herbal nuances, without a pronounced, harsh bitterness.

Processing and Harvesting

  • Tea is harvested in the spring, often before the Qingming Festival (the first week of April), when the buds are particularly tender. These harvests are called "Mingqian" — "before Qingming."
  • After harvesting, the leaves are processed the same day: first, "kuiqing" (a quick roasting to stop fermentation/oxidation), then rolling, shaping, and drying.
  • The flavor and aromatic complexity develop due to growing in misty and shaded conditions. The leaves are less exposed to direct sunlight, which promotes the accumulation of aromatic compounds and the slow development of a green flavor.

Brewing Tips

  • Water temperature: Around 90°C (or slightly lower) is considered optimal to avoid burning the delicate leaves.
  • Ratio: 1–2 grams for every 50–100 ml of water is often recommended, depending on the desired strength.
  • Brewing Time: The first steeping should take about 1–3 minutes; subsequent steepings can be increased by 30 seconds.
  • Yun Wu is often brewed in glass vessels to watch the leaves unfurl and "dance" in the water.
  • Tea can be steeped multiple times (3-5 times) if the conditions are maintained correctly.
