There is a difference between cocoa and drinking chocolate, and one spoon tells you which you are holding. Cocoa thins out. Drinking chocolate coats the back of the spoon and
holds on to it.

Our Belgian Hot Chocolate range sits in the second camp. Five flavours, sold from 50 g at AED 13, and made in whichever direction your evening is going: quick with hot water, comforting with milk, or slow and thick with cream, at which point it stops being a drink and becomes dessert.

The five flavours

FlavourThe ideaFrom
ClassicThe reference point. Straight cocoa depth with nothing competing for attention. Start here if you are buying for a household with mixed tastes.AED 13
Choco HazelnutChocolate and hazelnut, the pairing that made a whole category. Made with hazelnut, so check the pack if there are nut allergies at your table.AED 13
French CaramelCocoa with a caramel lean. Good with a pinch of flaky salt on top if you want to be dramatic about it.AED 13
Irish CreamThe creamy, vanilla-leaning end of the range. A flavour profile, not an alcoholic drink.AED 13
Raspberry SouffleThe one that surprises people. Berry brightness cutting through the cocoa, closer to a dessert than a mug of chocolate.AED 13

Every flavour comes in 50 g, 100 g and 250 g. The 50 g pouch is the sensible way to find your favourite before buying the big one.

Three ways to make it

With water, for a fast cup
Pour the mix with hot water and you get a smooth chocolate drink close to a good cocoa. This is the weekday version: two minutes, one mug, no pan.
With milk, for the everyday version
Milk gives you body without much effort. Heat it gently, whisk the mix in, and stop before it boils. This is the format most people settle on.
With cream, for the real thing
This is how the drink was designed to be made, and it is worth doing once so you know what you are working with.

  1. Measure 2 to 3 tablespoons of the mix into a small pan.
  2. Pour in 200 ml of heavy cream, 30 to 40 per cent fat.
  3. Simmer over low heat, stirring constantly, for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Pour into a porcelain cup and let it cool for about 5 minutes before the first sip.

Shortcut: cook the chocolate with water first and stir the cream in at the end. The result is less thick but takes a fraction of the time.

How to drink it: alternate sips of chocolate with sips of plain water. It sounds fussy. It is what lets you taste the second half of the cup as clearly as the first. To push the flavour further, add cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla or a pinch of red pepper.

What is actually in the pack

The Classic mix lists sugar, milk powder, low-fat cocoa powder certified by the Rainforest Alliance, salt, food emulsifier E551 and whey powder. Per 100 g it provides 370 kcal, with 8.5 g protein, 2 g fat of which 1.3 g saturated, 75 g carbohydrate of which 73 g sugars, and 1.2 g salt.

Two things follow from that list, and we would rather say them plainly:

These are milk based mixes. Classic contains milk powder and whey powder, so it is not dairy free. Each flavour has its own list, published on its product page.

This is a sweet drink. Sugar leads the ingredient list, which is what makes drinking chocolate taste like drinking chocolate rather than like unsweetened cocoa.

On caffeine: cocoa naturally contains a small amount of caffeine alongside theobromine. That makes hot chocolate a much lighter option than coffee, but not a caffeine free one. If you want a genuinely caffeine free evening drink, our rooibos and herbal tea shelves are the place to look.

Storage

Shelf life is 2 years. Keep the mix in its original packaging somewhere cool and dry, away from anything strongly scented, below 20 degrees Celsius and under 70 per cent humidity. In a Dubai kitchen that means a cupboard away from the hob, not a shelf near the window. Our storage boxes are built for exactly this.

Serve it properly

A thick chocolate deserves a cup that holds heat. Our mugs and cups range covers porcelain for the table and insulated travel bottles for the school run. Browse the full accessories collection for whisks, scoops and serving pieces.

Hot chocolate also makes an easy gift, especially paired with a dessert coffee such as Belgian Waffle or Tiramisu from our flavored coffee range. Tell our team what you want and we will pack it.
